Home Bay Area Alameda

Alameda

A small California city that is home to approximately 75,000 people, Alameda is a wonderful place to visit, with a multitude of interesting activities to keep you busy over the course of several vacations. Alameda is located on a small island near Oakland, CA, and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area metropolitan area. This small city has a rich history, as well as easy access to Oakland through many bridges and extensive cultural and artistic venues for anyone who loves the theater or one of the many other arts.

Alameda History

At one time, Alameda, CA, was not an island, but a peninsula connected to what is currently Oakland. The first inhabitants of Alameda were Native Americans from the Olhone tribe, until the late 18th century, when Spanish explorers and missionaries came to the entire California area. The city was founded in 1853. Its initial growth was attributed to the fact that Alameda boasted the first train on the Transcontinental Railroad to cross over to the San Francisco Bay Area. The area experienced another growth spurt in 1917 when Neptune Beach was built.

Neptune Beach was the home of many firsts that quickly spread across the rest of North America. Neptune Beach, now known as Crab Cove, was the first amusement park to offer up snow cones and popsicles. Neptune Beach also introduced Kewpie doll to the rest of the United States, with hand-made clothing and hand painted faces. Unfortunately Neptune Beach, which had a similar appeal as Coney Island, ended up shutting down during the Great Depression, but certainly helped Alameda become a major thoroughfare for the larger local cities. While Neptune Beach may be gone, there are plenty of other things to do in Alameda, CA.

Neptune Beach Amusement Museum

An homage to the major attraction at the beginning of the 20th century that helped bring people to Alameda, CA, the Pacific Pinball Museum is a collection of some of the classic games that were a part of the original Neptune Beach. The point of the Pacific Pinball Museum is to show the current generations of the Alameda area a simpler time, and to preserve the history of the Alameda area. At the Pacific Pinball Museum, patrons can learn about several different types of pinball machines, as well as enjoy several different exhibits that all pertain to the former glory of Neptune Beach.

The Bridges

There are many different bridges in Alameda, CA, which connect this island to the city of Oakland and the rest of California. These bridges, from the Posey Tube to the Ballena Boulevard Bridge, all take drivers to Oakland or further into California. There is also a bridge that takes drivers to Bay Farm Island, a separate island that is also part of Alameda.

Bay Farm Island

Connected to Alameda by the Bay Farm Island Bridge, Bay Farm Island is a separate island that is part of the city of Alameda, CA. This area is certainly well known, as it is not only an affluent residential community, but is also home to the world headquarters of the NFL team, the Oakland Raiders, and has a golf course as well as a high-tech industrial park. While Bay Farm Island is not known for its nightlife, this small island is certainly known for excellent views and adjacent from the Oakland International Airport.
