After 1906, refugees from the enormous earthquake moved to the El Cerrito, CA side of the Bay so that they could escape the devastation of the earthquake and the destruction of the fires that followed. While the city was incorporated as Rust in 1917, those who lived in the town decided they did not like that name, and it was changed to El Cerrito.

Like many of the other areas in the San Francisco Bay Area, the town of El Cerrito was mostly an agricultural town until the 1950's and the technological boom that characterized much of the Bay Area. El Cerrito then became a residential community and has developed into the beautiful town that is known and loved by many residents and visitors.

Ohlone Greenway
