Giant’s Ready for Opening Day 2017
The San Francisco Giants are always a playoff contender – but can they be a title contender in 2017? Last season they made it to the playoffs, but bowed out early after being defeated by the soon-to-be world champions Chicago Cubs. And although many see 2017 as a rebuilding year of sorts for the Giants, with 2018 being the year they make a run for the pennant, you can’t count the club out completely.
According to a report by Fox Sports, in order to be a 2017 title contender, the Giants must do three things:
- Rebuild the Bullpen: Many cite this as the reason the club fell to the Cubs. Several key pitchers were up for free agency this year, and depending on last minute moves, the Giants need to make sure they start the season with a fully-loaded bullpen.
- Find more Power: You can’t blame all of last year on the bullpen, however. As Fox Sports correctly notes, although the bullpen gave up runs, the Giant’s offense failed to score them. In fact, last year’s lineup lacked a 20-home run hitter and an 85 RBI man. In other words, the Giant’s need to add some powerful bats to their lineup.
- Third Base: Towards the end of last season, the team traded its starting third baseman. Following the trade, several players covered the ‘hot corner’, with one being placed on the DL for the remainder of the season.
No matter what happens this year, baseball season is just around the corner. After kicking off the 2017 season with trips to Arizona and San Diego, the Giants return to San Francisco for their home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 10th at 7:00 pm. Following a three game series against the D-Backs, the Giant’s then welcome the Colorado Rockies for a four game series before taking to the road.
