Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
Originally constructed as one of the main venues of the Panama-Pacific International expo in the early 1900’s, this iconic building was long known as the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. This multi-purpose venue has hosted hundreds of sporting events, shows and exhibitions, and even the 1920 Democratic National Convention. In 1992, it was renamed the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, after the well-respected concert promoter who brought hundreds of legendary musicians to the arena beginning in the 1960’s.
Musical Events
Over the years, the stage has been graced with the musical greatness of Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and one of San Francisco’s favorite, The Grateful Dead. Today some of the most popular bands from Country to R&B, consider this arena as the pinnacle of their tours, with many comparing it to playing Madison Square Garden in New York. Though it is considerably smaller, with a seating capacity of about 7,000, the notoriety of the venue is nearly just as great.
The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium not only holds concerts from popular, national bands, but also up-and-coming musical groups, DJs, and a variety of other alternative musical fare. In fact, some of the best raves in the Bay Area have occurred here. It is owned by the city, and it is truly a venue for the people of San Francisco, as they treasure this beloved landmark.
Sporting Events
But it’s not just music that brings crowds to the Bill Graham Auditorium, many sporting events and expositions are also on the docket. Tennis is a big draw to the venue, which hosted the 1974 Davis Cup final, and exhibition basketball games are also played here. In addition, the defunct San Francisco Warriors called the arena home in the mid 1960’s.
Multi-Purpose Venue
Corporate trade shows, industry conventions, and motivational speaking engagements are also held at the civic center. It is a fantastic venue for companies to announce or showcase their new products and services. The popularity of this arena is due to its great location. There are tens of fabulous restaurants nearby, and some of the city’s most iconic bars are just a trip away. Hotels are also close-by.
