Suds Flow in San Francisco

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on September 1, 2015

San Francisco has a long-standing microbrewery tradition, tracing its roots to the end of the 19th century. In 1896, Ernst F. Baruth and his son-in-law, Otto Schinkel, Jr., purchased an old brewery on Pacific Avenue and renamed it Anchor. The brewery burned down during the 1906 earthquake and survived prohibition. Renowned for a style called steam beer, the brewery was purchased by Fritz Maytag. He grew the business into an institution in the 1970s and 1980s and introduced the first modern-day Porter in the United States and the first India Pale Ale.

Today, Anchor is the foundation for a craft brewing revival in the Bay Area. The brewery is located in an old warehouse in the Mission District and offers two publically guided tours each day. Reservations, however, are required. The tour takes an hour and half. During that time, visitors will lean about the history of the brewery and the process for making quality beer. The cost of the tour is $15. The tour finishes in the tasting room, giving everyone a chance to sample the finally tuned combination of malt, hops and yeast.

But the fun doesn’t end there. Not far from Anchor Brewing is the 21st Amendment Brewery in the South Park neighborhood. Just a few blocks from AT&T Park, the brewery was founded in 2000 and has been a leader in the microbrewery industry for over a decade. The establishment is a traditional brewery and restaurant and has been voted one of the best brewpubs in San Francisco.

To enjoy a more natural version of the microbrewery trend, Thirsty Bear Brewing Company is a good choice. Thirsty Bear is the only brewery in San Francisco that brews organic beer. Many of the ingredients are sourced from local farmers. A Spanish-style tapas restaurant completes the overall experience.
