San Francisco Map Fair at The Lodge

There is something about old maps that stirs us deep within.  Seeing a drawing of a now familiar land mass rendered unusual due to the lack of contemporary structures, seeing a drawing that is meant to convey a comprehensive image of a place rather than a functional series of directions on how to make it from point A to point B by taking the fastest root causes us to feel a sense of possibility that, quite frankly, few modern experiences can recreate.  Okay, so perhaps you don’t identify with these words, but if you do, then we have a real treat for you.  From September 15th until September 17th, the San Francisco Map Fair will return to the The Lodge, located inside of the Regency Center at 1290 Sutter Street.

Featuring the efforts of over 20 dealers from around the country who specialize in acquiring antique maps, books, and other prints, the San Francisco Map Fair will give you the chance to comb through hundreds and hundreds of relics from the past 500 years of map making, bookbinding, and printing.

Consider it a chance to step back in time to an era where the world had not yet been covered by the evidence of humanity, when the oceans were still holding undiscovered lands, when the sun rose and fell on kingdoms that most people never even knew existed.  These are items from a period in human history where exploration and engagement with the world people lived in still felt ripe with possibility, long before the limits of our terrestrial home were solidified by computers.

As well as a main hall featuring vendors where you can take home an authentic piece of our essential history, the San Francisco Map Fair will feature a comprehensive series of lectures put on by the California Map Society.  A partial list of the proposed lecture topics includes:

• Mapping of the stars
• The development of San Francisco from a Historical Standpoint
• Map making techniques
• The propaganda side of map making

The net income of the San Francisco Map Fair will go towards the non-profit History in Your Hands Foundation which seeks to ensure that children are able to have actual objects from history in their classrooms in order to aid them in understanding the human past.

Except for the first day of the event (the 15h) when a special cocktail reception will require a small entry fee, admission into the San Francisco Map Fair is free.
