Union Street Spring Celebration and Easter Parade

Called “the biggest little parade in San Francisco” with an average attendance of over 30,000 people, the annual Union Street Spring Celebration and Easter Parade are back for the season on March 27th, 2016. As its name suggests, the parade event runs down Union Street between Gough and Fillmore. This year’s Spring Celebration will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the parade beginning at the Gough end of its route at 2:00 p.m.

The event, which is now in its 25th year, is aimed at showcasing San Francisco’s diversity, as well as presenting some of the best restaurants on Union Street via offerings served to attendees in a comfortable outdoor bistro setting. The event caters strongly to families and children, with a wide variety of children’s activities, games, rides and attractions, including inflatable bounce houses, a climbing wall, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, live music and even the Easter Bunny himself. Not everything is strictly family-oriented, though; visitors attending without children can find plenty to enjoy, not least of all the myriad food trucks, food vendors and area merchants.

Visitors to San Francisco should be aware that the Union Street Spring Celebration and Easter Parade are hardly anything like the average American fair or parade. An eclectic, fabulous, whimsical event, both the parade and the Spring Celebration in general feature weird and wonderful sights, including modern fashions, classic and/or art cars, roller-blading animals, miniature floats, and more. As with most things in San Francisco, it’s truly a sight to behold—and an unforgettable one, at that.

Attendees can also enjoy the oh-so-delightful Easter Bonnet Contest, either as a participant or an onlooker. Judging will occur at a designated Judging booth at Buchanan, and prizes will be awarded in such categories as Best in Show, Best Couple, Best Family, Best Pet, Most Elegant, Largest Hat, Most Creative, Most Comical and more. Judging will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and awards will be announced and handed out at 3:15 p.m. on the main stage (also at Buchanan).
