The San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival is a true Bay Area tradition, and 2015 will mark the race’s 20th year. This event, which is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, features 40-foot dragon boats. Don’t miss these fantastic creatures as they take their stage, the water, on Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th, from 10 am until 5 pm. Dragon boat racing is both a sport and an art.
This free-admission event is family friendly. Children relish rides, balloon animals, magicians, games, puppet shows, and much more! Perhaps your little ones would enjoy painting their very own wooden fan.
Education is also a focus at the International Dragon Boat Festival. Obstacle courses teach children about health and wellness, while Microsoft’s Land of Smart Kids offers projects in math and science. For example, boys and girls can practice coding! Of course, there are even less didactic activities, as well, such as yo-yo lessons
Kids, however, are not the only ones who adore this yearly Northern California festival. The beating of the Chinese drums during the races will take your breath away. It’s difficult to image the 100+ dragon boat teams – thousands of paddlers! – painting the water…even once you’ve seen it!
Many visitors return year after year for the stage performances alone. From Tahitian dancers to Chinese acrobats, musical theater performances to martial arts demos, there’s something for everyone… but typically everyone loves everything!
