20th Annual Sonoma International Film Festival

Cinema and San Francisco are no strangers to one another.  Many of the world’s best and brightest filmmakers, stars, and enthusiasts hail from this great and wonderful city, and many continue to call it home.  Perhaps it is the picturesque bay, a great counterpoint to the heat and sand of LA, or perhaps it is simply the rich culture that San Francisco fosters that attracts these movie magicians.  Either way, when it comes to film, San Francisco has its finger on the pulse.

One of the many film festivals sweeping through our City by the Bay this year is the Sonoma International Film Festival.  This year marks the 20th anniversary of this great event, one of the earliest in the year, and to prove it the minds behind the festival have selected a well rounded and wild array of nearly 100 films for you to chose from.  Spanning every genre, from documentary to fiction to shorts, the Sonoma International Film Festival is regarded as one of the most up-and-coming film events in the world.  In fact, Movie Maker Magazine recently ranked the Sonoma International Film Festival as one of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World, which is no small praise.

Focusing on independent film over everything, you will not see many of the blockbusters or studio behemoths lurching across the screens at the Sonoma International Film Festival.  Instead, what you will receive is a more intense, more focused, and more individual style of filmmaking, one that comes directly from the filmmaker’s soul as they attempt to wrangle their innermost visions onto celluloid (or, because we are in the 21st century, into pieces of digitally stored information).  But the festival is about much more than movies.  Indeed, many of the area’s best and brightest working within the food scene and the wine scene will be on hand to share in the atmosphere and heighten your artistic senses with even more well-crafted items. So, come for the movies, but stay for the Sonoma International Film Festival Village, where you can wander around, rubbing elbows with movie stars, ordering gourmet food from trucks, and partying the night away Hollywood style.
