The Flaming Lips are still the band to see after over 30 years of performing. The fact that they are from Oklahoma City is just the tip of the weird iceberg that is Wayne Coyne and his band mates. Here are some of the things the Lips live shows have bequeathed to the world: puppets, giant hands, elaborate costumes, blood (lots of blood), confetti, a video of an eye surgery, a gigantic inflatable hamster ball, and more confetti. Lots of confetti.
Formed in 1983, their discography includes 15 full-length albums including Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, which offered up “She Don’t Use Jelly”; The Soft Bulletin with “Race for the Prize”; and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots that produced “Do You Realize.” The latter even went on to be voted the Official Rock Song of Oklahoma. The Flaming Lips are recipients of three Grammy Awards, but they are internationally celebrated.
The Faming Lips music is described in so many ways that it becomes obvious they defy normal convention. Known as Alternative, Rock & Roll, Psychedelic, Experimental, Space Rock, and Post Punk, all of these influences have been critical to their success. Nevertheless, any true fan will tell you that it’s their live shows that elevate The Flaming Lips to rare strata.
