The Sound of History With A Contemporary Twist
GGPB plays a variety of family-friendly tunes in a number of different styles – oftentimes visitors will hear a blend classical and swing – enjoyed by children, teens, and adults alike. Flutes, piccolos, tubas, bassoons, an electric bass, and timpani are among the many instruments whose sounds dance together within the lush Golden Gate Park. This group of professional musicians has enjoyed the leadership of Conductor and Music Director Michael L. Wirgler since 1999.
Free concerts take place every Sunday at 1:00 PM from April through October on the Speckles Temple of Music stage, more casually known as the bandshell, within the historic Golden Gate Park. Summer 2015 themes include “Around the World in 90 Minutes,” “Salute to African American Composers and Artists,” “The Musical World of Disney II,” and much more.

The venue, the Golden Gate Park, is reason enough to attend a Sunday concert. The grounds include over one thousand acres of diverse landscape featuring gardens, trails, lakes, monuments, and more. From the Victorian-style Conservatory of Flowers to the Japanese Tea Garden, each visitor always finds something to love. Make sure to stroll by the Herschell-Spillman Carousel if you haven’t yet – built in the early 1900’s, colorful dragons, goats, horses, dogs, and other creatures twirl about amongst San Francisco-inspired backgrounds.
