Metric and Joywave at The Masonic

By San Francisco Limousine Specialist on December 3, 2015

On Tuesday, February 23rd at The Masonic, Metric will showcase their lapidary talents. Formed in 1998, the soaring vocals of Emily Haines are accompanied by a sound that is sometime synth and sometimes indie. Metric defies categorization, but some music critics have labeled them new wave. Regardless, their music is reliably recognizable as Metric, yet it’s always completely new.

In the late 90’s, Metric toured their home country of Canada before signing with a label in England and moving to London. Eventually they meandered back to New York. They have been enjoying critical and commercial success ever since.

James Shaw, the man behind the guitar, theremin, synthesizer, and backup vocals, is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, and this shows. At times, vocalist Emily Haines’ sounds young and fragile, and this makes the driving, galloping guitar and the epic beat beat behind her voice even more striking. On their more synth-like songs, Haines’ child-like sound careens forward in a delightfully innovative way. Killer lyrics addressing gender politics, power, alienation, and love complete the package.

While listening to an entire Metric album is the ideal way to enjoy the variety that they provide, the band has generated a long list of songs that can clearly stand on their own. “Help I’m Alive,” “Gold Guns Girls,” “Breathing Underwater,” “Combat Baby,” and “Patriarch on a Vespa” are among the many gems.

Metric will be joined by indie darlings and satellite radio stars Joywave. They’ve built an incredible following since their inception in 2010. In 2013, Joywave collaborated with another electronic indie group, Big Data, to produce “Dangerous,” which ranked at #1 in the US Billboard Alternative Chart. Recently the band has been featured on Late Night with Seth Meyers and Lollapalooza. This is a band that’s big and still on an upswing.
