Caltopia Free Campus Festival at UC Berkeley

This Sunday and Monday get ready to head down to UC Berkeley for the 14th Anniversary of Caltopia, a huge (and free) festival that takes place on the campus and brings together scores of artists, musicians, exhibitors, demonstrations, and lots and lots of people having a great time.

The occasion is, of course, the start of UC Berkeley’s schools year, and the festival works to integrate the academic community (which, let’s face it, can sometimes feel a little distant from those of us on planet earth) with the surrounding neighborhoods. What this means is that the event is open to everyone, not just students, and everyone has a chance to participate in the entire two-day blitz with equal fervor.

Along with the 30,000+ visitors along the campus, the festival features a well-stocked exhibition area with over 100 exhibitors, like:

• Peet’s Coffee & Tea
• The Oakland Raiders
• Grubhub
• International Studies Abroad
• Pepsi
• Breathe health Center and Services
• Blick Art Materials
• Berkeley Shambhala Center
• Amazon Campus
• Funky Door Yoga
• Benefit Cosmetics

These exhibitors join in with dozens of other fun booths and activities to create a highly-charged and exciting atmosphere. Have some old clothes you never wear? Goodwill Industries of the East Bay will be on hand to accept donations, and as an added bonus to knowing that you are helping people in need everyone who donates at Caltopia will receive a brand-new Do Something Good T-shirt.

Guided meditations will be lead by the Berkeley Shambhala Center, and there will be demonstrations of Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, Yongmudo, Wushu, and Taiji. And what would a festival be without scads of live music! Caltopia features acts like:

• Drawn to Scale
• Noon Rally featuring the Cal Band and Cheer Squad
• Golden Bear Bhangra
• Zahanat

Caltopia is a bastion of good vibes, great food, and free giveaways to guests. This is a community-minded event that seeks to create ties between individuals, break down borders, and generally promote a feeling of goodwill and camaraderie among the students, the larger community, and the world at large.

The 14th Anniversary Celebration of Caltopia takes place on Sunday and Monday, August 21st and 22nd, and is held at the UC Berkeley Recreational Sports Facility at 2301 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, California.
