Proms Offer Alternatives to Party Buses

Prom organizers at Tracy High School have seen attendance drop sharply in recent years as many students are renting party buses instead of going to prom. While party buses may be the ultimate in prom transportation, a surprising number of kids are choosing to organize their own prom nights in smaller groups. Tracy High School activities director Alayna Carter says that some kids think that renting a party bus is a more fun and exciting option than an evening of dinner and dancing at Tracy’s Portuguese Hall.

“The kids just aren’t showing up any more,” she said recently. “They… take the party bus to San Francisco, walk around, eat wherever and drive back to someone’s house. They weren’t going to the dance, because they figured it’s just in Tracy, when they can go and do stuff out of town.”

Carter, a physical education teacher, said that this mindset has forced some Bay Area high schools to add flair to make prom more attractive. This year, instead of prom goers arriving at Portuguese Hall in limousines, party buses and cars, students attending the upcoming West High prom will be transported to and from a dinner and dance at Canyon View in San Ramon in school buses.

West High’s activities director Shauna Liel said that this year will mark the first time that the school has had an “all-inclusive” prom that included transportation, dinner, dancing and photos.

“I wanted to do something new and exciting to get more kids involved,” said the English teacher and first-year activities director. “And I really like the whole idea of taking it out of town and doing something a little more classy.”
