San Francisco Neighborhood Guide: North Beach
San Franciscans call this neighborhood by two names. One is North Beach, which fits this neighborhood’s current status as a trendy place to live, eat and shop. The other is Little Italy, which fits the neighborhood’s ethnic past and still-current identity. Book lovers call this San Francisco neighborhood by both names. However, to them, the name matters little; it’s the incredible new and used bookstores that have made this a Mecca for bibliophiles for many decades. You see, North Beach is home to our fair city’s most famous bookstore, City Lights. City Lights continues to draw readers from all over the world who yearn to sit, read and relax in the very same rooms where Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg, Kerouac and other literary giants wrote, read and hung out in days past.

Rolls-Royce Celebrates 100th Anniversary of Hood Ornament in Style
Now here’s a story worthy of celebration! Legendary luxury automaker Rolls-Royce celebrated the 100th anniversary of their inimitable hood ornament recently by sending 100 Rolls-Royce automobiles of all vintages out into the streets of London. The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy has graced the hoods (bonnets on that side of the Atlantic) of Rolls-Royce motorcars for the last 100 years and is one of the most universally recognized symbols in the world.

World business and political leaders wanting the newest and latest in comfort and security presented Maybach engineers with a challenge. The challenge was to build a luxury limousine befitting a head of state that also includes security features often found in armored personnel carriers. It appears that Maybach’s engineers were up to the task as the Maybach Guard made its debut near company headquarters in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Rolls-Royce says the vehicle costs a few pennies per mile to operate and has zero emissions, a marked change from other limos made by the legendary luxury automaker. Rolls says the new Phantom can be charged via electrical outlet or wirelessly by driving over a unique electric pad that can be installed in owners’ garages.

Bill in Washington Senate Targets Illegal Town Car Drivers
Drivers who operate independent and illegal car services in Seattle and throughout Washington State could have a tougher time conducting business if lawmakers pass a bill currently under consideration in the state Senate. Senate Bill 5502 targets a persistent problem in Seattle with unlicensed, uninsured and unregulated drivers who pick up passengers in shiny, late-model Lincoln Town Cars. These illegal drivers siphon business from companies that operate legitimate taxi and limousine services and endanger passengers by not following state regulations.
Vintage Popemobile Limousine Makes Rare Appearance on This Side of Atlantic
The landaulet-style 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman limo commissioned by the Vatican for Pope Paul VI, also known as the first Popemobile, will make a rare North American appearance soon at the Amelia Island Vintage Car Show on March 11, 2011. The show and auction are an annual event on this northern Florida island, and this year’s show promises to be extra special as this will be the first appearance in the United States for this unique limousine. The Popemobile is on loan from the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, and it is seldom displayed in Europe, making this appearance quite unusual. This limo has been housed at the museum since it was decommissioned in 1985 after the latest Popemobile was built.
Lincoln Introduces New MKT Model to Entice Limousine Services
Lincoln, Ford’s luxury branch of cars, limousines and SUVs, has rolled out a new crossover model it feels is perfect for limousine services here in the U.S. and around the world. The new Lincoln MKT crossover is being marketed as a possible replacement for the popular Lincoln Town Car models that have been mainstays of limo services in San Francisco and throughout the country. Since it has just become available, it’s too early to tell whether or not limo services will vote for the MKT with their checkbooks. However, insiders say that the MKT could fill a niche and complement, rather than replace, the Town Cars found in most luxury ground transportation fleets.
