Newark

The city of Newark, California, is unusual because it is an enclave with a population of approximately 48,000 people. This means this small city is completely surrounded by another city, which happens to be Freemont, California. Newark is a part of Alameda County and has a total of 14 square miles. Newark History

The community of Newark is over 150 years old. The city began as part of Mayhew’s Landing, which had warehouses that were filled with wheat, hay and coal, and Mayhew Ranch. This economic activity promoted interest in the area, and in 1856, Mayhew Ranch incorporated 1,500 acres of land that was eventually purchased less than 20 years later by the Perrin Brothers. These brothers began a development project, and the area that was once Mayhew Ranch was eventually brought into a swampland reclamation project that encouraged the land owners to plan a township area.

The land began changing hands many times as more interest was taken in the swampland reclamation project, and a railroad was built through the area, making travel easier. In the 1950’s, when the housing boom hit the area now known as Newark, the city leaders decided to incorporate the small city even though housing developments were appearing all around it. Five years later, the town of Newark was incorporated into California, defeating the efforts to make it part of the growing metropolis of Fremont. Today, Newark is still a part of the independent spirit that the leaders had over 50 years ago and continues to hold the ideals of the community as the important cornerstones of the city.

Newark Days

One of the main attractions of Newark is the annual celebration held in September known as Newark Days. This is a celebration of the incorporation of the city, which was a very important event for this independent enclave. Aside from being a birthday celebration for the small city, Newark Days also offers many different activities for anyone who is lucky enough to attend. Usually held around September 22, the official incorporation date of Newark, the city celebrates with a carnival, a parade complete with parade floats, and a race which have all been part of Newark Days for over half a century.
