Millbrae, CA History

The history of Millbrae begins in the 1860’s, when financier Darius Ogden Mills purchased land from the Sanchez Estate to build his own manor. The Mills Estate, called “Mill Brae” for its rolling hills, spread gradually to include a large stretch of land including three lakes and the massive manor house. Eventually, Mills began selling off the land for development purposes. In the 1950’s, the Mills Estate burned to the ground, but left behind the developing city known as Millbrae and the booming population that marked the post-war years for many places.

Transportation also helped shape Millbrae with the addition of railroads and street cars as well as the movement to stop a highway from being built directly through the city. In January, 1948, the city of Millbrae, CA was incorporated into the rest of San Mateo County and California and now has a population of approximately 21,000 people.
