Atherton

Part of California’s San Mateo County and considered one of the wealthiest cities in North America, Atherton is a beautiful retreat for anyone who is looking to take a trip to one of the exceptional small towns near the San Francisco Bay Area that is close to many different places to visit. Atherton, CA, has a population of about 7,200, making it a small town, and is mostly a residential community, home to people who work not only in San Francisco, but Oakland and the rest of the California Bay Area.

The goal of Atherton’s residents is to preserve the natural beauty of the small town that is nestled between San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean. This abundantly wooded area has a rural feel without being lost within the elegant foliage, gardens, and heritage trees that populate as much as the town as people. The streets within Atherton are not built for speed or for getting around efficiently, but for driving along the scenic views and enjoying the gorgeous panorama of nature. There are no industries or businesses within the town, and this only adds to the splendor that residents and visitors to Atherton get to enjoy every day.

Atherton History

Atherton started out as a flag stop in California known as Fair Oaks, and part of the California Coast Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad between San Francisco and San Jose. This flag stop was there mostly for the convenience of those who owned a large amount of land and lived to the north of Menlo Park. Yet, there were several attempts to incorporate Fair Oaks into Menlo Park, and eventually the people who lived in Fair Oaks realized that if they wanted to remain their own town, they would have to incorporate on their own.

It was when the Fair Oaks committee arrived at Sacramento that they discovered there was already an incorporated city in California named Fair Oaks. The committee then decided to name the brand new town after one of the first and most influential citizens of the area, Faxon D. Atherton. In 1923, Atherton became incorporated, and no longer had to worry about Menlo Park wanting to incorporate it into the other town. Only 28 miles from San Francisco and the Bay Area, Atherton became very popular with the influential and wealthy families of the Bay Area, and remains one of the wealthiest cities in the United States today.
